Alfa Romeo S.Z.
A car is born. We look at it, we judge its lines, its mechanics; we either love it or loathe it. From the moment we first learn of its existence leafing through the pages of a magazine to when we can finally touch it at a Mo tor Show, from the moment we first see it on the roads to when we perhaps choose it as our own personal means of transport and source of sheer pleasure, we will have run the gamut of an infinite range of emotional experiences. Often, however, we know little about the whys and wherefores of the car in question and nothing at all about the lengthy prenatal gestation period which normally lasts for several years. And a car, especially when it is a high class sports car like the Alfa Romeo S.Z., can never simply appear out of the blue. The main thrust of this book, which is based on the information supplied by the men who followed the project at first hand, is aimed at discovering the thinking behind the design and engineering of a car as atypical and important as the S.Z. a unique exemplar reproduced one thousand times, if you like. This is the story of how a sense of raw aggression was translated into sheer style by a famous manufacturer which had not produced a new coupe in quite a while. It is also the story of how the new technologies used to produce the S.Z. will contribute to vastly reduced planning times for all cars in the very near future
