?What did you do in the war, Daddy?? ? the words that encouraged Alan Deller to record his reminiscences of his time in the Royal Air Force ? and elsewhere! At the outbreak of war in September 1939 Alan was working for Shell, at its international headquarters in London. Like many other young men he immediately volunteered for the RAF, applying to train as a pilot. His ambition was thwarted when, less than an hour after receiving it, his call-up was cancelled and he was on his way to Romania, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, and the beginning of an amazing tale of intrigue and adventure. Having been expelled from Romania, Alan and the rest of his team eventually ended up in Egypt where he again applied to the RAF and, again, having had his hopes raised had them dashed just as quickly. This time he was commissioned as Sub Lieutenant, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve but it later transpired that he was actually operating as a member of the Special Operations Executive. During one of his trips from Egypt onboard HMS Dolphin a Sunderland ?ying boat flew overhead and Alan immediately knew that that was the aircraft he wanted to ?y. He did, eventually, and his adventures in Rhodesia, South Africa, Northern Ireland, the Mediterranean, Scotland and the Far East are recorded here in an enthralling, yet entertaining, tale.
